A few weeks ago I posted Ancestry DNA I would suggest you give it a read before you read my results. All caught up? Good.
Okay so first before we get into it I just want to say that 26 years ago today I officially had a family! I am talking about my adoption day and it is just crazy that I get my results in time! I feel like this is my greatest gift… okay well not really but it is up there.
If you didn’t know I was adopted from Russia and I mentioned in my first DNA post that I didn’t think there was much Russian in my blood and well guess what…… there isn’t!!!
Okay so lets just get into this! So first off lets start with the highest percentage of my history. I am 67% Europe East and it is full of many countries but Ancestry was able to break it down smaller. This is actually where my family history started but I can actually pin point it to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland! I am what is known as West Slavic. It just means a section of the countries that are in my blood line and seeing how it is 67% of who I am is crazy! The other really cool part is you can see that my family history started in the early 1800’s.
Aright so the next actually is A LOT of a smaller percentage but it is Asia Central. Okay so this one acutely REALLY surprised me! So Asia Central is broken down to Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Okay now those are a mouthful!!!!! Honestly I have only ever heard of Afghanistan! Really not sure how to feel about this one just because it NEVER crossed my mind that I would have them in my blood line and the fact I don’t know those countries!
Now this is where things start to get interesting! Asia East is only 9% of me and the countries that make up that are Russia, China, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei and Palau. Now I feel like the 9% is Russia but as of right now it is just broad on where the percentage is from. It will change over time as more people do the DNA test.
Okay so things now REALLY get SMALL!!! Coming in at only 5% is Finland/Northwest Russia. Again I would assume for me it is Russian but until more people take the test I can’t be sure.
Last and the MOST surprising is my 2% of Native American! This one really just shook me up! I just couldn’t believe that there would be somewhere SO close to Canada for me! I know how this one happened like most it is when everyone was immigrating to North America. It is really interesting to be able to see the time frame of when my ancestors were immigrating from Europe to America plus you can actually see the areas where they all moved to!
Okay now what I found AMAZING aside from all of this is you also get matches of distance cousins! I found this long list of people who are 4th-10th cousins! This I found AMAZING because being adopted I have never known any family members and the fact that now I have this list of distance cousins! I did sent off messages to some of them and plan of sending more messages. So far no one has responded but that is okay I can’t force someone to talk to me! I did my part it is now up to them!
Now here is another really interesting this you can download your DNA results in a raw file and upload it to GEDmatch where it will take all the DNA test results from all the companies (if you upload it) and then compare it and find more family members! What I thought was really cool is they can take your DNA and figure out your eye colour so I tried this and it was right on!
Another interesting thing this site can do with your results is see if you parents are related at all….
Okay so this was a very long post I know and honestly there is SO much more I would love to say and keep talking about but I won’t! I have been holding this information in for a week now because almost everyone didn’t want to hear my results they wanted to read it here so it has been hard not to just say what the results say!
Have you taken the Ancestry DNA test or one from another company? Were you surprised with your results at all? I sure know that I was surprised at some of it.
